Evangelium Vitae on Other Offenses to Life

Expounding on the vast range of offenses of the Culture of Death, John Paul II writes, in Evangelium Vitae,

What of the spreading of death caused by reckless tampering with the world’s ecological balance, by the criminal spread of drugs, or by the promotion of certain kinds of sexual activity which, besides being morally unacceptable, also involve grave risks to life? It is impossible to catalogue completely the vast array of threats to human life, so many are the forms, whether explicit or hidden, in which they appear today!

Ecological responsibility is a pro-life issue.
The drug war, obviously, is a pro-life issue.
But it is interesting that John Paul notes, in passing, how sexually promiscuous behavior, due to spreading STDs, is also an offense against life.
Interesting contrast to those who say that the Church is irresponsible in regard to AIDS by opposing condoms: how about those who engage in promiscuous sex are “irresponsible” in regard to AIDS?

Jon and Kate + 8 – “Jon and Kate”

Big surprise, the Gosselins are divorcing.  Now, doing things right is no guarantee, either, but when you’ve already destroyed the foundations of a family,  how can you expect it to survive?

“They’ve killed our baby”–another case proving the Church is right on IVF

First it was Octomom, then it was Jon and Kate.  Now, a case out of the UK embodies the horrible consequences of tampering with Natural Law by using in vitro fertilization.

A couple have a six year old son through IVF.

They had another embryo “in storage” for when they decided to go ahead and have another kid.  (“You know, it’s, like, great to have back-ups, in case one like dies or something, kinda like backing up computer files.”)

Well, the lab “made a mistake” and implanted the embryo in the wrong mother.
Now, of course we know the whole motivation of IVF is people with fertility problems (usually do to waiting too long to have kids in the first place) want “their own” kids and are horrified at the option of adoption.
So, what does this woman do when she finds out the embryo inside her is the genetic child of another couple?
She has an abortion!

And what does the original mother who Han Solo’ed her baby say about that?

“In less than 10 seconds,” said Deborah, “our wonderful world was shattered when the senior embryologist stood in front of us and said, ‘I’m very sorry to tell you, but there’s been an accident in the lab. Your embryo has been destroyed.’ We were both rooted to our seats. We were stunned and trembling. We held each other tightly, and sobbed and sobbed. It was like water from a tap. I kept thinking, ‘They’ve killed our baby.'”

Ya know . . .

Batman on IVF

Batman, in a recent episode of the new serise Batman: The Brave and the Bold (referring to a robot):

“Creating life in a laboratory is a dangerous game.”

Majority of IVF embryos are "abnormal"

Fascinating.

One of the reasons for the founding of this blog was outrage over the use of in vitro fertilization for eugenic purposes: people “screening” known genetic defects by using IVF.

Mary Meets Dolly reports that researchers have discovered that the *majority* of embryos conceived in IVF carry genetic disorders. A few days ago, I discussed the idea of “reverse consequentialism” where we point to the negative consequences of violating Natural Law as proof that the action violates Natural Law.

Well, for some reason, unnaturally conceiving embryos via IVF causes those embryos to mutate.
