Novena to St. Therese, Day 9
A Treasury of Prayers to St. Therese of Lisieux
Thou, servant of God, St. Therese of the Child Jesus, who in thy dying moments didst say: I will spend my heaven in doing good upon earth, hasten to let fall upon me a shower of roses that I too may be inflamed with that fire of love which burned so brilliantly in thy breast and which brought thee so gloriously to the arms of Jesus, my Lord and my God. Amen.
St. Therese, the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from the heavently garden and sent it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I thee implore and tell Him I will love Him each day more and more:
[State Request. I am asking this Novena for the ongoing intentions of our job and housing situations, the repair of my van, and the intentions of my friends, especially Jim and Ruby, Sharon, Lorelei, Leslie and Lynne]
O God, who have said, “Unless you change and become as little children, you shall not enter the the kingdom of Heaven,” grant, we beseech thee, that we may walk in the footsteps of Thy blessed virgin Therese, with humility and singleness of heart, so as to attain the reward you have promised to little children. We ask this through Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Wisdom of Bishop Myriel: Expenses
M. Myriel had no property, his family having been ruined by the Revolution. His sister was in receipt of a yearly income of five hundred francs, which sufficed for her personal wants at the vicarage. M. Myriel received from the State, in his quality of bishop, a salary of fifteen thousand francs. On the very day when he took up his abode in the hospital, M. Myriel settled on the disposition of this sum once for all, in the following manner. We transcribe here a note made by his own hand:—
NOTE ON THE REGULATION OF MY HOUSEHOLD EXPENSES.For the little seminary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,500 livres
Society of the mission . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 100 ”
For the Lazarists of Montdidier . . . . . . . . . . 100 ”
Seminary for foreign missions in Paris . . . . . . 200 ”
Congregation of the Holy Spirit . . . . . . . . . . 150 ”
Religious establishments of the Holy Land . . . . . 100 ”
Charitable maternity societies . . . . . . . . . . 300 ”
Extra, for that of Arles . . . . . . . . . . . . . 50 ”
Work for the amelioration of prisons . . . . . . . 400 ”
Work for the relief and delivery of prisoners . . . 500 ”
To liberate fathers of families incarcerated for debt 1,000 ”
Addition to the salary of the poor teachers of the
diocese . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,000 ”
Public granary of the Hautes-Alpes . . . . . . . . 100 ”
Congregation of the ladies of D——, of Manosque, and of
Sisteron, for the gratuitous instruction of poor
girls . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,500 ”
For the poor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6,000 ”
My personal expenses . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,000 ”
———
Total . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15,000 ”M. Myriel made no change in this arrangement during the entire period that he occupied the see of D—— As has been seen, he called it regulating his household expenses.
-Victor Hugo
Of that $1,000 he kept “for himself,” 1/2 paid for his housekeeper.
Do you think you could live off of 3% of your income and tithe the other 97% (presuming, of course, you had your own house, cows and garden provided for)?
When informed that he is entitled to a travel budget from the government, the Bishop willingly accepts it (which elicits scoffs from atheist officials, who think that the supposedly saintly bishop has started to show his “true colors”):
That same evening the Bishop wrote out and handed to his sister a memorandum conceived in the following terms:—
EXPENSES OF CARRIAGE AND CIRCUIT.For furnishing meat soup to the patients in the hospital. 1,500 livres
For the maternity charitable society of Aix . . . . . . . 250 ”
For the maternity charitable society of Draguignan . . . 250 ”
For foundlings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 500 ”
For orphans . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 500 ”
——-
Total . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3,000 ”Such was M. Myriel’s budget.
He dined on toast and milk (from his own cows) for most meals, and soup or vegetables for supper. The only time he served meat or fish was when another priest visited.
With that exception, his ordinary diet consisted only of vegetables boiled in water, and oil soup. Thus it was said in the town, when the Bishop does not indulge in the cheer of a cure, he indulges in the cheer of a trappist.

G. K. Chesterton on Teleology and the Argument from Desire
I felt in my bones; first, that world does not explain itself. It may be miracle with a supernatural explanation; it may be a conjuring trick, with a natural explanation. But the explanation of the conjuring trick, if it is to satisfy me, will have to be better than the natural explanations I have heard. The thing is magic, true or false. Second, I came to feel as if magic must have a meaning, and meaning must have some one to mean it. There was something personal in the world, as in a work of art; whatever it meant it meant violently. Third, I thought this purpose beautiful in its old design, in spite of its defects, such as dragons. Fourth, that the proper form of thanks to it is some form of humility and restraint: we should thank God for beer and Burgundy by not drinking too much of them. We owed, also, an obedience to whatever made us. And last, and strangest, there had come into my mind a vague and vast impression that in some way all good was a remnant to be stored and held sacred out of some primordial ruin. Man had saved his good as Crusoe saved his goods: he had saved them from a wreck. All this I felt and the age gave me no encouragement to feel it. And all this time I had not even thought of Christian theology.

“The birth of a child is a miracle, and yet the most common thing in the world.”
“The birth of a child is a miracle, and yet the most common thing in the world.”
–Don Hastings as “Bob Hughes” in the final episode of _As the World Turns_, 9/17/2010.
How often do we consider that the greatest miracles of all–the Sacraments, and life itself–happen all the time?
Considerations on the 1983 versus 1917 Code
Lately, one of the things that’s been popping up in the Islam-West Culture War is the concept of veils-whether having any kind of veil at all or complete head-to-toe covering. You see headlines about schools taking field trips to mosques and girls refusing to wear veils.
You know, just 40+ years ago, Catholic women were required to veil their heads in church, and arguably, anywhere in public.
And there are those who use a Calhounian argument that for anything not explicitly mentioned in the 1983 Code of Canon Law, the 1917 Code should be presumed to be at least the more preferable option.
But that raises one of many questions about “the Spirit of Vatican II” and “the changes of Vatican II.” The Vatican II Code of Canon Law was not published until 1983–20 years after the Council.
Presumably, the 1917 Code was still in force until the 1983 Code was issued. Yet women stopped wearing mantillas *long* before the 1983 Code was issued, and many of the other policies reflected in the 1983 Code were in place long before the Code took effect.
This is an honest question: would someone like to explain why between 1965 and 1983 it was OK to ignore the 1917 Code?

You know all those graphic pictures of war victims?
Here’s one for you:
Liberals will show you graphic pictures of various war atrocities, human rights violations, AIDS victims, and whatever cause they want. Show pictures of abortion and aborted babies? “That’s disgusting!” “That’s inciting violence!” “That’s offensive!” “Those images shouldn’t be shown in public!”

I knock, I seek,
I ask that my prayer be granted.

St. Therese Novena, Day 4
A Treasury of Prayers to St.
Amen.
Flos Carmeli
Obeautiful Flower of Carmel, Most fruitful vine, Splendor of Heaven, Holy and Singular, Who brought forth

Hope of all who die wearing the Scapular, pray for us!

Why is it “racist” to call Planned Parenthood racist?
Apparently, billboard companies in Dallas and Houston, Texas support the genocide of African Americans. They are refusing to accept an ad campaign by a group called Heroic Media which addresses the disproportionate targeting of African Americans for abortion at Planned Parenthood “clinics.”
Proving Huckabee right, Chris Christie puts Planned Parenthood out of business
There have been a lot of headlines lately about the conservative activism of New Jersey’s new governor, Chris Christie. A while back, he vetoed several million dollars in state funding for Planned Parenthood. While the initial vote had a veto-proof majority, several Republicans changed their votes after his veto, so the vote to overturn his veto failed. Therefore, having lost a major source of its budget, the Cherry Hill, NJ, Planned Parenthood has closed down, and several others are expected to follow.
This proves Mike Huckabee’s argument that there is a lot more state and federal politicans could be doing about abortion than what they do.

You know what they say about “All it takes for evil to triumph”?
The late Bob Casey, Sr., former governor of Pennsylvania, said he was a Democrat because he always believed the Democratic Party stood up for those who were defenseless and voiceless in society: and the most defenseless and voiceless of all are the unborn.
