New Jerusalem Bible Online

I’m always looking for Catholic translations online for free, and, although I don’t like it because it’s politically correct (and supersedes the translation that J.R.R. Tolkein worked on), the “New” Jerusalem Bible is available online at!

  1. Normally I would agree with you on the PC language. That stuff makes me crazy but the NJB is not particularly offensive in that regard, certainly a lot less so than the NAB which we are subjected to at the Mass. About the worst I’ve seen in the NJB is substituting ‘humanity’ for ‘mankind.’

On the other hand, there are some very good points about it. There were some problems in the JB which were fixed. In the parable of the wheat and the tares (or weeds, whatever your version uses), the NJB uses darnel which is a plant that grows in the Holy Land and looks very much like wheat. This emphasizes Jesus’ point in the parable. There are other good examples which I won’t go into here.

  2. Inclusive language is an issue in the Psalms because of the language that is traditionally attributed to Christ. E.g., “Happy the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, nor lingers in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of scorners, but whose delight is in the Law of the Lord and who ponders his law day and night”–that only applies to Jesus, no one else.

  3. I came across another one at veritasbible:

I use it over because of the other parallel catholic bibles (and Haydock commentary too).

  4. Thank you Jesus
