New Year’s Day Devotions and Prayers

Today is a big day.  If ever a day could be referred to as “The Holidays”, this is it.  Let’s see what we’ve got in Santa’s goodie bag:

1.  New Year’s Day.
2.  World Peace Day.
3.  The Feast of St. Basil the Great (Eastern Calendar; St. Basil is the one who brings the presents in some European and Asian countries, as he was also wealthy and charitable).
4.  The Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord
5.  The Solemnity of Christmas (Day 8; Octave of Christmas)
6.  The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (Theotokos).

I was going to do a post on prayers for New Year’s Day–there’ s a Plenary Indulgence for reciting the Veni Creator Spiritus today–but this blog already has a great list of suggestions.

“Lex Orandi” above mentions the Akathist hymn to the Theotokos. Here is Ode 1 in English:
